The House Energy and Commerce Committee today sent a letter [PDF] to John Rost, Chairman of the North American Metal Packaging Alliance, in pursuit of documents related to the recent meeting of bisphenol A lobbyists, that was reported on by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Washington Post within the last few days.
Citing the MJS and WP reporting, and specifically citing talk at the meeting of "using fear tactics" and "befriending people that are able to manipulate the legislative process," Chairman Henry Waxman and Congressman Bart Stupak, Chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations requested that Rost provide:
- All documents and communications, including talking points, minutes, summaries, memoranda, media statements, e-mails, and drafts of any such documents, relating to meetings of the BPA Joint Trade Association in April and May 2009, including documents and communications created by the date of this request;
- A list of all attendees at these meetings, including their affiliations and contact information; and
- A list of all members of the BPA Joint Trade Association, including their contact information.
These documents are to be provided by June 16 2009.
As you contemplate the content of those documents, bear in mind that this is one of the few committees in Congress that has subpoena power. |
